On the 8th February at the BBC studios in MediaCity, Salford, Manchester, Kerrie-Anne performed as one of six vocalists competing to represent the UK in the world-renowned, perennial favourite, Eurovision Song Contest. Competing against Anisa in one of three ‘song off’ battles, Kerrie-Anne opened the competition with a bang in a sexy gold shimmering outfit delivering
her version of “Sweet Lies”, written by Scandinavian singer-songwriters Maria Broberg, Lisa Cabble and Esben Svane, and featuring the brilliant Jamie Haj on production. Accompanied by four dancers dressed in contrasting black shimmy outfits, the studio resonated with her energetic, upbeat vibe as Kerrie-Anne brought the venue alive, enchanting the audience with her charismatic, impassioned delivery.
“Sweet Lies” tells the bittersweet tale of a woman in love who can’t face up to the truth that her relationship is over and so keeps urging her partner to tell her “Sweet Lies” and give her “sweet highs”. Kerrie-Anne’s version has all the hallmarks of a classic summer dance floor anthem, and she certainly had the crowd enthralled with her dynamite performance.
The judges’ verdict was equally unanimous – Rylan Clark-Neil said that Eurovision needed a song like this, Marvin Humes (from JLS) complemented Kerrie-Anne on her singing and dancing prowess, and Radio One DJ Mollie King said that she loves a ‘pop banger’ and would love to play the track on the radio. Anisa delivered the song as a power ballad, and was complemented by the judges for her flawless vocals, however they were absolutely blown away by Kerrie-Anne’s powerful rendition and all three sent her through to the final round.
Kerrie-Anne delivered the goods for the second time in the final along with Jordan Clarke singing ‘Freaks’ and Michael Rice performing ‘Bigger Than Us’. Michael won the public vote and will represent the UK in Tel Aviv in May. Although Kerrie-Anne didn’t win the contest, she certainly won the hearts of the UK public and gained many new fans from her dynamic performance. The world needs to hear more from this hard-working, talented lady with the warm smile and honey-toned voice – she brings pure sunshine to every occasion.
